Who To Watch At The 2021 ISCA International Senior Cup
A star-studded field takes to the pool at the 2021 ISCA International Senior Cup.
Dates: March 23 - 27, 2021
Location: North Shore Aquatic Complex
A star-studded field takes to the pool at the 2021 ISCA International Senior Cup and with Olympic Trials just a few months away we fully expect to see some high-octane racing. Olympic gold medalists, world record holders, and more will be in St. Petersburg competing over the next few days (March 23 - 27) at the North Shore Aquatic Complex. Prelims will be held in short course yards (SCY) and finals will be held in long course meters (LCM) to help Olympic hopefuls continue gearing up for trials. Speaking of Olympic hopefuls, below we’ll highlight a few names and events to keep an eye on.
WHO TO WATCH:
Ryan Lochte
If this name isn’t immediately familiar to you, we recommend watching any Olympic swimming footage from the past 12+ years or googling “most decorated Olympians of all-time” real quick. Lochte might be at the tail end of his career but he has undoubtedly been putting in the work necessary for him to take one more run at an Olympic berth. With a heavy event schedule lineup up (nine events) we could see some scratches or see Lochte test his racing endurance in St. Petersburg. Either way, it will be a great indicator as to what is to come in Omaha.
Events:
- 50/100/200 Free
- 200/400 IM
- 100/200 Back
- 100 Fly
- 200 Breast
Caeleb Dressel
Plain and simple, this guy is arguably the most exciting swimmer on the planet right now. After breaking seemingly unbreakable barriers in the short course yards pool, he’s now been able to set his sights almost completely on the long course pool and doing some serious damage to those records. He has a pretty hefty event schedule here and like Lochte, we might be seeing Dressel start to test his meet and racing endurance, but with Caeleb you never know what could happen so if he’s swimming… find a way to watch.
Events:
- 50/100/200 FR
- 50/100/200 FL
- 100 BR
- 200/400 IM
Sherridon Dressel
Speed runs in the Dressel family as the sister of Caeleb Dressel, Sherridon, looks to fine-tune before trials in the 100 back and 100 fly. She’s been 50.6 in the short course 100 backstroke, which few swimmers in NCAA history have, and a 51.2 in the 100 fly as well. Along with the 100 fly + back, she’ll be in some 50s as well as another event to watch in the 200 backstroke, where she’s been 1:50.9 as well. Her full event schedule can be seen listed below.
Events:
- 50/100/200 FR
- 50/100/200 BK
- 50/100 FL
Joseph Schooling
Dressel’s club teammate at Bolles school and rival in college, Schooling is well known for his dominant 100 fly gold medal at the 2016 Olympic games taking down who some would consider the greatest swimmer of all-time, Michael Phelps. Dressel and Schooling will be great to watch in the 100 fly as we expect to see them battling it out again at the games with Schooling representing Singapore and Dressel representing the USA. Like many of the other high-level swimmers we’ll see at the meet, we’ll have to wait and see what kind of shape they’re in as there’s more to come this summer. However, with Schooling’s lighter event schedule we could see him test the speed at the North Shore Aquatic Complex.
Events:
- 50/100 FR
- 50/100 FL
Erika Pelaez
At just 14-years-old, Erika Pelaez already has her Olympic trial cuts and is looking for more at the ISCA International Senior Cup. She’s at the age where anything can happen at any meet and she’s one to keep an eye on as we inch closer to Omaha as well. Her full event schedule can be seen below.
Events:
- 50/100/200 FR
- 50/100 FL
- 100/200 BK
While we’ve highlighted a few specific swimmers above, everyday we get closer to Omaha and the 2020 (now 2021) Olympic Games in Tokyo, these athletes are getting closer to go time. The names on this list just scratch the surface of the talent that we’ll see at the 2021 ISCA International Senior Cup in St. Petersburg at the North Shore Aquatic Complex over the next few days.
