Top 3 Men's Matchups To Watch For...
1.) Blake Pieroni (IU) vs. The Field — 50/100/200 Free
The 2016 Olympian and IU senior has been on point this season, holding the nation's third-fastest time in the 50 (19.65), third-fastest time in the 100 (43.07), and fastest time in the 200 (1:34.10). Notre Dame has Justin Plaschka at 20.0 and 44.2 and Tabahn Afrik at 44.3, but it's going to take a huge effort to take down Pieroni.
2.) Zach Yeadon (ND) vs. The Field — 500/100
The Notre Dame freshman has been lights out so far this season in the mid-D/distance freestyle. In his first couple of dual meets, he has already laid down times of 4:21 and 9:02 in the 500 and 1000, respectively. The closest competitor from either Indiana or Cincinnati is IU's Adam Destrampe in the 500 at 4:27 and IU's Spencer Lehman in the 1000 at 9:15.
3.) Rob Whitacre (ND) vs. Mohamad Samy (IU) — 200 Back
On the men's side, this is probably one of the most evenly matched races. So far this season, Whitacre has already been 1:44.9 and Samy has been 1:45.6 — both nationally ranked times. Expect these guys to push each other in this one.
Top 3 Women's Matchups To Watch For...
1.) Lilly King (IU) vs. The Field — 100/200 Breast
King is head and shoulders above the pack in the breaststroke events. She holds the fastest times in history in both the 100 and 200 and the fastest time in the country in the 100 this year (59.44). Her 200 (2:10.13) is well off what she will be at the end of the season but still good for the sixth-fastest time in the country and out of range for the Notre Dame and Cincy breaststrokers this weekend.
2.) Abbie Dolan (ND) vs. Kennedy Goss (IU) — 200 Free
Notre Dame's Abbie Dolan came out swinging in the first meet of the season, taking down Louisville's Mallory Comerford in the 100 and 200 freestyle by a combined 0.06 of a second. Dolan now faces her second toughest test against Indiana's Kennedy Goss. Dolan's best this season? 1:46.12. Goss' best this season? 1:46.79. We have ourselves a race, ladies and gentlemen.
3.) Kennedy Goss (IU) vs. Alice Treuth (ND) — 200 Back
The 200 back is arguably Goss' second-best event (behind the 500) — she finished seventh at NCAAs in 2017. She has some heat coming her way from Notre Dame's Alice Treuth, though. Treuth has already thrown down a 1:55.76 this season — a top 16 time — compared to Goss' 1:56.66. Both of those are legit dual meet swims, and we can expect more of the same from them on Thursday.
*NOTE — dual meet lineups have not yet been set. This is assuming the aforementioned swimmers are entered in their primary events*
