USA Swimming's Speedo Sectional Championship series has long provided swimmers -- of all levels -- a great opportunity to put up championship-caliber performances every spring and summer. Even further, Sectionals has always been a great stepping stone for swimmers looking to qualify for other National level meets -- Junior Nationals, Nationals, U.S. Open, Olympic Trials, etc.
Take Dakota Luther, for example. Luther trains under three-time Olympian and Olympic gold medalist Brendan Hansen at the Austin Swim Club in Austin, Texas. On Tuesday, June 27th, Luther stunned the field at the 2017 Phillips 66 National Championships and World Championship Trials in the 200m butterfly to touch second and qualify for the World Championship team. Pretty incredible. Even more incredible considering Luther is only 17 years-old and was seeded ninth coming into the meet -- on nobodies radar. Except her own, maybe.
How did Luther get to this point?
Luther raced at the 2016 Sectional Championships in Austin, Texas where she dropped a 2:11.62 in the 200m butterfly. So how did Luther -- in the span of one year -- go from 2:11.62 all the way down to the 2:08.71 that punched her ticket to Budapest? A lot of hard work, presumably. But, what comes along with hard work?
Opportunity.
Meets like this provide swimmers like Dakota Luther opportunities to progress and get championship-caliber racing under their belt. Will we find another swimmer like Luther sprout from the ranks at the 2017 Sectionals in Austin? Stay tuned.
