Cate Campbell On WR: 'The Best Swims You Don't Remember'

After a disappointing showing (by her standards) at the 2016 Olympics in Rio, Australian swimmer Cate Campbell opted out of selection for the 2017 FINA World Championships in Budapest, Hungary.

She told The Australian in March 2017, “I’m taking a long-term approach and focusing on the 2018 Commonwealth Games and then looking forward to 2020. So this year isn’t about being the best, it’s about being my best. I’m taking a bit of a mental health year."

Well, Campbell is back in a big way. The three-time Olympian and five-time Olympic medalist shattered the World Record Thursday in the 100m (SC) freestyle with a 50.25 at the Australian Short Course National Championships in Adelaide.

Old WR: Sarah Sjöström (50.58)

New WR: Cate Campbell (50.25)

Could we be on the brink of seeing our first female under the 50-second barrier?

We think so.

In the video interview above, Campbell talks about the WR swim and looks ahead to a stacked field -- including Sarah Sjöström, Ranomi Kromowidjojo, Femke Heemskerk, and sister Bronte Campbell -- at cluster three of the FINA World Cup in November.
