WATCH: Sophomores Claim Throne In 200 Freestyle Relay At Texas Class Relays

Eddie Reese and the Texas Longhorns had their annual “Class Relays” this afternoon at the Lee and Joe Jamail Swim Center in Austin.
Reese described the Class Relays as “one of the most important days of the year” and went on to say, “If we could keep that energy and effort going for the rest of the year, we wouldn’t have many worries.”
There is no doubt the energy was electric amongst the men’s team and it is evident they take a lot of pride in stepping up to perform in these relays. The times and splits certainly reflect this.
For the 200 Freestyle Relay, the sophomore squad consisting of Tate Jackson, Jeremy Nichols, Townley Haas, and John Shebat claimed the throne fairly easily ahead of the senior squad with a 1:17.42 thanks to a couple of monster splits on the back half from Haas (19.19) and Shebat (19.00).
One thing about this relay that was notable to Reese was the number of guys who were sub-20 seconds. Of the 16 total swimmers in the four different relays, nine were 19 seconds or better including a stellar 18.87 from, you guessed it, Joseph Schooling. That’s not too shabby for practice.
It’s worth noting that Texas took the crown at last year’s NCAA Championships in this event with a 1:14.88, just ahead of N.C. State in 1:15.09. You can bet both of these teams are going to be title contenders again this year.
