CIF State Meet: Santa Margarita Girls, Northwood Boys Capture 1st Titles
The Santa Margarita girls and Northwood boys teams each won state titles at the CIF State Swimming and Diving Championships on Saturday in Fresno, CA.
On a weekend that saw 13 California state meet records go down, the Santa Margarita girls and Northwood boys swimming and diving teams ensured there was a changing of the guard at the fourth annual CIF State Championships on Saturday evening at the Clovis Olympic Swim Complex in Fresno.
Both Santa Margarita and Northwood earned their first state team titles at the meet, with the Eagles girls compiling a record 266.5 points—over 100 points more than the runner-up—and the Timberwolves boys tallying 157 for a tight seven-point margin of victory.
Last year’s champions, the Monte Vista girls and Oak Ridge boys, each finished in second place, while the Saint Francis girls (118.5 points) and Bellarmine boys (145) rounded out the team podiums in third.

A day after five records were broken in prelims, the Davis girls got the finals off to a scorching start in the 200-yard medley with a new all-time state meet mark of 1:41.31. Santa Margarita responded with a pair of record-breaking relay performances of its own: 1:32.44 in the 200-yard freestyle and 3:19.56 in the 400-yard freestyle.
Meanwhile, in individual competition, three girls swimmers each captured a pair of titles. Granada’s Miranda Heckman earned her second straight state title in the 200-yard freestyle and third consecutive in the 500-yard free.
Country Day’s Amalie Fackenthal captured back-to-back titles in both the 50-yard freestyle, tying her state record of 22.45, and 100-yard freestyle, setting a new state record of 48.43. Monte Vista’s Zoie Hartman notched a new state record in the 100-yard breaststroke in 59.66 and also took home the 200-yard individual medley crown.
In the boys relays, Bellarmine set a new meet record in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:22.34 and added a victory in the 400-yard freestyle, while Oak Ridge continued its reign as 200-yard medley champion for the third straight year with a final time of 1:31.32.
Individually, Alexei Sancov of Northgate repeated as the 200-yard freestyle champion with a new meet record of 1:34.13. Calvary Chapel’s Andrew Koustik also added his name to the state record books with a final time of 4:19.14 in the 500-yard freestyle.

Foothill’s Jonah Cooper won his second consecutive state title in the 100-yard backstroke—following a state meet record swim of 46.62 in prelims—and Oak Ridge’s Ben Dillard notched a new state record in the boys 100-yard breaststroke with a final time of 53.96.
