The No. 10-ranked Indiana women's water polo team and No. 13 Hartwick opened their respective 2018 campaigns as the marquee matchup of the Indiana Classic in Bloomington, IN, on Saturday — and the contest lived up to its billing.

A late rally by tournament host IU fell short when Hartwick scored to take a two-goal lead with just 1:41 to go in the game, and the Hawks held on for a 13-11 victory to hand the Hoosiers a loss in their first game of the weekend.

Hartwick dominated VMI in its second game, 16-9, but found some trouble against upset-minded Marist. The Red Foxes scored just 34 seconds into the game but proceeded to fall behind 5-3, 8-6 and, ultimately, 12-9, before a Marist rally changed the game.

The Red Foxes scored six times in the fourth quarter to steal a 15-14 come-from-behind win.

After taking its opening lump, Indiana was outstanding the rest of the way, closing out its home tournament with a pair of convincing wins against VMI and Marist on Sunday.

The Hoosiers scored just 30 seconds in against the Red Foxes, racing out to a 5-1 lead and never looking back, en route to a 10-3 victory.

In the end, Indiana, Hartwick, and Marist combined to go 10-3 — each team’s lone loss coming against one of the other two.
