Seven games into the season, Fresno State will open its home slate with a matchup against Fresno Pacific on Friday night in Fresno, CA — the program's first-ever regular-season game in front of its home crowd.
“Our first home game against Fresno Pacific is a great opportunity to showcase water polo in the Central Valley and give the Red Wave the chance to see this historic game in person," FSU head coach Natalie Benson said. “The team is fired up to be playing at home, and we look forward to having a huge crowd.”
The Bulldogs went 0-4 at the Cal Cup two weeks ago but tested their mettle against some of the top programs in the country, including No. 1 Stanford and third-ranked Cal.
Callie Woodruff has been a bright spot for the group this season — particularly in a 19-10 loss to No. 10 UC Davis on Jan. 27, during which she accounted for five of the team’s 10 goals.
Fresno State enters the week ranked No. 21 in the most recent Collegiate Water Polo Association poll.
Fresno Pacific is winless in its first four games, but, like its counterpart on Friday, the Sunbirds have faced stiff competition, including No. 13 UC Santa Barbara and fourth-ranked UCLA.
Julia Ponce, the Fresno Pacific's leading scorer from a season ago, leads a group that’s averaging 5.8 goals per game thus far.
The game is scheduled to begin at 5 PM (PT) and can be watched live on FloSwimming.
