Day 4 Prelims | No Show For Morozov, Hosszu Takes Two Top Seeds
Results and highlights from day four prelims Saturday at the 2017 LEN European Short Course Championships in Copenhagen, Denmark.
The fourth and penultimate day of the LEN European Short Course Championships began Saturday morning at the Royal Arena in Copenhagen, Denmark.
This morning’s schedule included the 50m butterfly, 100m freestyle and 100m IM for the male sprinters and the 50m backstroke, 100m butterfly, 200m freestyle and IM events for women.

Long course world champion Ben Proud cruised to top time in Saturday morning’s prelims with a 22.39. He will look to go one better after his silver medal in the 50m freestyle on Friday night.

Katinka Hosszu races for another chance at a gold medal, and will have good competition from short course sprint specialist Kira Toussaint of the Netherlands. These two ladies went 1-2 in the 100m earlier in the week.

Italy had two men blast prelims, with Luca Dotto and Lorenzo Zazzeri swimming the fastest and third-fastest times of the morning. In the absence of world No. 1 Vlad Morozov, who has chosen to focus on the 100m IM — which is also scheduled for the same session — this event opens up. Also in the mix is Budapest finalist Sergii Shevtsov, short course world champion Simonas Bilis, Olympic medalist Pieter Timmers, and Hungarian guns Dominik Kozma and Nador Nemeth all qualifying for tonight’s semifinals.

Sjöström stayed in second gear while winning her heat by a second, with her 56.05 topping prelims for the morning. Short course world champion Hosszu scratched the event, already having the 50m back and 200m IM races in the same session.

After swimming a 20.31 50m freestyle last night, WR holder Vlad Morozov was a no-show Saturday morning for this event. Countryman Sergei Fesikov was able to take top seed in his absence and will start as favorite for the final on Sunday night. Italian Marco Orsi qualified second for the semifinals after placing fifth overall, but he was third among the Italian swimmers and missed out earlier in the 100m freestyle.

Russia will look for another relay gold medal and will start as the favorite for Saturday night's splash-and-dash relay final.

Poland’s Pawel Juraszek threw down a 21.19 leadoff, and Finland’s Ari-Pekka Laukkonen swam a 20.81 for the fastest splits of the field.
