The Top 10 Things Swimmers Should All Be Thankful For
Top 10 things the FloSwimming team is thankful for on Thanksgiving.
For swimmers, Thanksgiving is like the Super Bowl for doing what we do best — eating. So while you get those disgusting looks from family members who stare at you while you shovel your third serving of stuffing down your gullet and slurp the gravy off your plate, we say to you — keep on keeping on.
The purpose of Thanksgiving isn't all about food, however. It's about spending quality time with our loved ones and acknowledging the blessings in our lives. In the spirit of the holiday, the FloSwimming crew shares the top 10 things we are thankful for.
1.) Heated Pools
Listen, for most of the country it gets pretty cold in November (Florida — we don't want to hear anything from you). So when you dive in the pool the morning after Thanksgiving, debating whether or not you're going to sink from all of the food you ate the day before, be grateful the pool is at least kind of warm.
2.) People Who Don't Leave Early
When you're getting ready for a fast effort in practice and your coach says to leave on the top, there is nothing worse than the person in the lane over that leaves on the 0:58, inevitably beating you because they cheated. Don't be that person.
3.) Food, Food, & More Food
What is the one thing that swimmers cherish more than taper? Food. For the 99.99 percent of us that don't make the Olympics, this is your time to shine. It only comes around once a year, so make it count.
4.) Boomer Phelps' IG Account
This one is pretty self-explanatory. 794K followers before the age of 2? I mean, the kid is doing something right. To be honest, we're just impressed how well he can spell at such a young age — and play golf.
5.) Naps
Mmmm. Sleep. Warm bed. Couch. Floor. Sitting straight up in a chair. It doesn't matter. Anytime swimmers can get a good ol' cat nap in, it's a good day. Be thankful for your uncanny ability to fall asleep anywhere and anytime — it's truly a gift.
6.) Get-Out Swims
Every team has one — that swimmer who always steps up when it means the rest of the group gets out of practice. Love that person until the day you die. Oh, and love getting out of that main set of 10x400 IMs, too.
7.) Did We Mention Food?
Did we? I'm pretty sure we did. But just in case, we ought to mention it again — just to cover our bases. It's that important.
8.) Parent Volunteers
The selfless ones of the bunch. The ones who wake up at 4:45 AM to drive a minivan full of zombies to a swim meet. The ones who carry trays of trail mix and assorted fruit for hours on end to the officials and coaches, slapping down the hands of swimmers who try and sneak a Dixie cup or two. The ones who sit behind the blocks with a stopwatch in hand, getting splashed incessantly, and only cursing under their breath a little bit. You know who you are. We are thankful for you.
9.) Taper
This one is up there on par with food and naps. To a swimmer, hearing the word taper is similar to hearing you just won the lottery. It will have you singing and skipping "It's The Most Wonderful Time Of The Year" all over the pool deck. Too soon? OK, well it's almost Christmas.
10.) Teammates & Coaches
The support system. You love them. You hate them. You need them. Take a moment today to say "thank you." Send a text, give a hug, or offer a high-five, or just simply give that look and nod that says, "I'm really appreciative of you, but I don't like feelings so I'm just going to hope you read my body language."
