Just like he did in the semifinals on Thursday night, Russia's Anton Chupkov waited until the last 50 meters to strike. Sitting in fourth at the 150 mark, there was no doubt the 2016 Olympic bronze medalist would make a surge -- and surge he did. Chupkov blazed a monster 31.99 split on the last 50 -- 0.79 faster than anyone else in the field -- to claim gold in 2:06.96. That time is a new championship record and European record as well. Chupkov now holds the second-fastest performance of all time and became just the second man to break the 2:07 barrier. The first? World-record holder Ippei Watanabe who finished in third with a 2:07.47. Watanabe's Japanese teammate Yasuhiro Koseki claimed the silver in 2:07.29.
