*DSQ* Ella Eastin -- "swimming more than 1/4 of race backstroke"
*DSQ* Bethany Galat -- "swimming more than 1/4 of race backstroke"
Wow. A lot to unpack here. First and foremost, Leah Smith is an absolute stud. The freestyle specialist decided to give the 400m IM a go and it paid off. Big time. Smith dropped a swift 4:33.86 to take the win and the third fastest time in the world this year. But unfortunately this race came with some drama as well. Stanford's Ella Eastin touched for second, but it was announced that she was disqualified for "swimming more than 1/4 of race backstroke." What does this mean? The Lochte Rule -- Eastin took about two underwater dolphin kicks on her back as she transitioned to her stomach on the freestyle leg, which apparently warrants a disqualification. Even more, Bethany Galat was disqualified for the same exact thing -- although her DQ came with a less severe implication.
With that being said, Elizabeth Beisel will now be joining Smith in Budapest to represent the United States in the 400m IM.

8.) Curtis Ogren -- 4:21.88
Another Georgia Bulldog 1-2-3 sweep in the 400m IM led by Chase Kalisz in 4:06.99 -- just 0.24 off his silver medal-winning time in Rio. At the 200 meter mark, Kalisz and Jay Litherland were neck and neck -- touching in 1:59.31 and 1:59.66, respectively. But as he traditionally does, Kalisz took off on the breaststroke leg with a massive 1:08.66 split. Litherland made a strong push on the freestyle leg, but it was too little too late to catch his teammate; he touched second in 4:09.31 -- his first time under 4:10. The third Bulldog, Gunnar Bentz, had a blazing freestyle leg as well -- making up some ground and touching third in 4:11.66.

5.) Hellen Moffitt -- 58.40
6.) Katie McLaughlin -- 58.49
7.) Danielle Nack -- 58.98
8.) Kendyl Stewart -- 59.59
While she flipped third at the 50 meter mark (26.95), this race was all Kelsi Worrell. The 2016 Olympian took this race in 57.38 thanks to a strong back half. The race for second was intense, though. Sarah Gibson and Mallory Comerford turned sixth and fifth, respectively, but rocketed home. In the end, Gibson got her hand on the wall for second and a spot in the team in 57.96. Comerford -- who is not a butterfly specialist and already on the team -- touched just one one-hundredth of a second behind in 57.97 for third.

5.) Justin Lynch -- 52.20
6.) Zach Harting -- 52.52
7.) Andrew Liang -- 52.87
8.) Matthew Josa -- 52.88
Wow. At the 75m mark of this race, it was too close to call between Caeleb Dressel, Tim Phillips, Jack Conger, and Tom Shields. But somehow, as he always does, Dressel found another gear and lunged into the wall for the win and fastest time in the world this year. As a matter of fact, Dressel is the first man to break the 51-second barrier in 2017. Tim Phillips -- who placed fifth at Olympic Trials last summer, just 0.24 away from making the team -- got his hand on the wall second in 51.30 ahead of Jack Conger in 51.33. Great swim for Phillips who has always been on the fringe when it comes to qualifying for major international teams. Shields rounded out the top four in 51.55.
Women's 50m Breaststroke -- FULL RESULTS
World: 29.48 -- 8/3/2013 -- Ruta MeilutyteAmerican: 29.66 -- 6/29/2017 -- Lilly King

5.) Jorie Caneta -- 30.99
6.) Andrea Cottrell -- 31.06
7.) Katharine Ross -- 31.10
8.) Breeja Larson -- 31.28
Well, it was no world record but Lilly King secured the American record with a dominating 29.66 in the 50m breaststroke. Not only is that the fastest time ever by an American and the fastest time on U.S. soil of any nationality -- but it is also the fastest time in the world this year and sets King up very well for a WR attempt in Budapest. Katie Meili had a great race touching for second in 30.11 -- the third fastest time in the world this year -- and Molly Hannis rounded out the top three in 30.24.

6.) Michael Andrew -- 27.40
7.) Matt Anderson -- 27.78
8.) Ian Finnerty -- 27.82
For the majority of the race Kevin Cordes had his hands more full than he would have liked. With about 15 meters to go, Cordes was in the lead but the field was going with him. In this case -- it pays to be 6'5" as Cordes used his long frame to lunge into the wall and get his hand on the wall first, lowering his U.S. Open record by one one-hundredth of a second to 26.88. Andrew Wilson and Cody Miller fought hard, but touched in second and third with a 27.18 and 27.24, respectively.

In a new championship record, Mizzou's Hannah Stevens gets her hand on the wall just ahead of Kathleen Baker and Ali Deloof who were charging hard. With a lightning fast 27.63 Stevens punched her ticket to Budapest to represent the United States in the 50m backstroke. Whoever qualifies in the 100m backstroke on Friday will have the opportunity to race the 50 as well.

Justin Ress brought home the gold and is headed to Budapest in a stunning finish! Taking down backstroke giants Matt Grevers, Ryan Murphy, and a star studded field -- the 24.41 for Ress has put the sprint backstroke world on notice to say the least. Coming in second from lane one was Murphy in 24.64 and in third Grevers at 24.67.
