The first night of the 2017 Men's B1G Championship concluded tonight, giving us a taste of what to expect for the next three days after tonight’s 200 Medley Relay and 800 Freestyle Relay.

200 MEDLEY RELAY

Indiana’s Ali Khalafalla goes huge on the freestyle split, giving the Hoosiers the title.

After the backstroke legs, Indiana’s Bob Glover, Ohio State’s Matt McHugh, and Penn State’s Shane Ryan were out in front 21.19, 21.20, 21.27.

After the breaststroke leg, Ohio State took the lead after a 23.40 split by Jack Barone. However, the fastest splits of the field was Michigan’s Chris Klein (23.23) followed by Minnesota’s Conner McHugh (23.36).  

Indiana took over the lead once again after Vini Lanza’s 20.37 split, just a tenth ahead of Ohio State. Minnesota’s Paul Flair had the fastest split of the night (20.31). At this point, Michigan sat in 3rd, followed closely by Minnesota.   

Indiana took the win thanks to a monster anchor split from Ali Khalafalla (18.43), which gave the Hoosiers the B1G title with a 1:23.61. This time is just behind Florida’s SEC winning time of 1:23.44 from last week.

800 FREESTYLE RELAY

Indiana leads from beginning to end, earning them the second title of the night.

Olympian and Indiana Hoosier, Blake Pieroni, gave his relay a huge 1:31.83 leadoff split, the 10th fastest 200 freestyle of all-time, also faster than Mike Wynalda’s 1:32.14 meet record in the 200 freestyle. However, not too far behind was Wisconsin’s Cannon Clifton (1:33.32) and Ohio State’s Josh Fleagle (1:33.80).

Indiana maintained their lead after Marwan El Kamash splitting 1:33.41, but a charging Michigan closed in thanks to Freshman phenom Felix Auboeck throwing down a HAMMER in 1:31.74.

Hoosier Anze Tavcar maintained the Hoosier lead thanks to a 1:33.54 split, moving further ahead of Michigan and Wisconsin.

Indiana took the victory in a 6:11.98, with Mohamed Samy splitting 1:33.20, but not far behind and closing rapidly was Wisconsin’s Brett Pinfold (1:31.81) who touched in 6:13.78, a new school record for the Badgers. Michigan dropped to 3rd in 6:14.00.
